So, are you a lefty or a righty?
At the start of many of the target sport sessions we deliver here at Experience the Country we ask a simple question, are you a lefty or a righty. The thing is, we don’t mean which hand you choose to write with, but which eye is most dominant.
Wikipedia defines eye dominance, or Ocular dominance to give it its full title as “The tendency to prefer visual input from one eye to the other. It is somewhat analogous to the laterality of right- or left-handedness; however, the side of the dominant eye and the dominant hand do not always match” A miss match between hand and eye dominance is often the cause of shooting trouble, especially with a bow and arrow. Fortunately, there is a simple test that you can do to check eye dominance and some simple steps to rectify the problem.
To work out your eye dominance:
- Bring your hands together at arms length in front of your face and create a hole between your thumps and forefingers
- With both eyes open, focus on an object in the distance.
- Close one eye and then the other. Whichever single eye gives the same image is the dominant eye.
- Still not sure? Keep the object in sight, keep both eyes open and slowly bring your hands back toward your face. Yours hands will cover your non-dominate eye while you will still be able to see out of the dominant.
Give it a go, you may surprise yourself!
